There is a lot of joy that comes out of the job description “Tea Alchemist.” There’s also a lot of challenge. Because of the way I approach life, oftentimes the joy and the challenge come at the same time.
I’ve spoken before to how much I love it when we are contacted for a custom tea. When it is for a new medicinal, it opens up volumes of possibilities, both in learning and in ability to help.
A little while back I was contacted regarding our custom tea listing, for a tea to assist with Ulcerative Colitis. I knew just enough about the disease to know that I didn’t know enough yet, and that we did not already have a tea that was the best answer we could give. However, I let the client know I was game to try, and after receiving her go-ahead and a lovely in-depth array of information, I went to my books, and my solid internet sources. (Most of these are actually places where I can read medical abstracts and full rundowns on various disease symptoms, causes, vectors, and common medication side effects.)
From my research I decided that one tea wasn’t going to do it, and the disease itself made me want to be sure that at least one of the teas I created was going to be more specifically designed for the person it was intended for. Both in taste, and in additional assistance.
Most disorders involving the GI tract come with nutritional deficiencies. This particular one also comes with inflammation.
In the end, I decided to create a tea based in barley (which has a ton of useful vitamins and minerals, and was a flavour I knew the recipient liked) that involved other important nutritional herbs, as well as some help with inflammation, and … Well, if you have experienced any form of chronic illness, especially one that limits your mobility and freedom, or involves consistent pain, or… it does effect your mood. So, we wanted to help with that, too.
Combining all these factors, we created ‘SereniTea: Rusty’s Recuperation.’
Now for the basics:
Organic Ingredients: St. John’s Wort, Rosehips, Oatstraw, 120L Barley
Organic or Conventional, depending on current supply: Turmeric
Batch Size: 4.2 ounces, approximately 35-40 cups
Options: Loose Tea (Sample, Bag, Tin), Teabags
* Due to the inclusion of St. John’s Wort, a medication list should be looked over before you drink this tea. This is especially important if you are taking any psychiatric medications or medications for nerve pain.
** I am not a doctor. The FDA (along with other governmental agencies) has not recognized any of this as fact. We do draw on science as well as tradition, but the path from research proving efficacy to formalized treatment is a long and complicated one. (Especially since plants can’t really be patented.) None of the information contained in these pages is intended to diagnose, treat, or cure disease from a medical standpoint.
***I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist. No mood tea that I formulate is directly intended to replace any psychiatric medication. If you are taking any form of psychiatric medication, you should consult both me and your doctor before drinking one of our SereniTeas. The side effects and contraindications for practically all psychiatric meds are long and complicated, and I really prefer to look into them before suggesting a tea.
