We knew from the creation of ‘Beauxbaton’s Blend’ that we eventually wanted to have teas for each of the Hogwarts houses – and for Durmstrang – but it took us ages to get around to it.
The idea had been discussed, in a general sort of way, and I had some relatively sketchy notes on what might be good for those teas.
For Hufflepuff all I had was “good for right before bed.”
Extended and detailed conversations on Twitter brought it down to two basic thoughts, one wanted more than that other.
One was something along the lines of a spiced cider or apple pie – the other was a lemon with similar spice.
The problem was we didn’t yet have dried apples on hand as an ingredient.
However, we do have an industrial grade dehydrator. So, Mister Tea picked up a couple lbs of apples so that we could run tests, to discover whether or not we could effectively get apple into our tea toolbox.
It was an interesting experience. Mister Tea is much faster with a grater than I am with dice and chop.
The end result was discovering that we could, in fact, use apples.
The next step was settling in and creating the tea.
What I discovered is that apple is invincible. As a taste. At least with the combination of other ingredients I had chosen. It took several test blends to bring the other tastes up to the level we wanted, because I hadn’t realized how potent the apple would be. (Even after testing it on its own as a single ingredient tisane.)
Our goal was to create a “hug in a mug.” With the coziness of barley and hawthorn and calendula under the apple cinnamon… I think we came close.
Organic Ingredients: 120L Barley, Hawthorn Berries, Dried Apples, Cinnamon, Calendula
Batch Size: 3.8 ounces, approximately 35-40 servings of tea
Options: Loose Tea (Sample, Bag, Tin), Teabags (Single, Sample, Bag)
